M&CC establishing Le Repentir restoration bank account

THE Mayor & City Council (M&CC) will, on Monday, finalise arrangements with Bank of Nova Scotia, to open an account for the restoration of Le Repentir Cemetery.

Councillor Ranwell Jordan, who made the disclosure yesterday, told the Guyana Chronicle that Acting Town Clerk, Ms. Yonnette Pluck and Head of the Cemetery Finance Committee, Ms. Rahema Rahaman, will meet Scoitabank officials.

A section of the Le Repentir Cemetery, which is in dire need of restoration, being cleared recently.

According to Jordan, contributions received from resident citizens, as well as overseas-based Guyanese, for the improvement of conditions in the burial ground will be paid into that source for withdrawal when necessary.

He said the City Engineer’s Department does not have the necessary tools to complete the required works and that makes it necessary for the funding to make purchases.

Jordan said, once the fund is operational, any contributor who wants to make an input can pay money directly into it.

Last October 23, councillors and other concerned citizens met at City Hall and discussed issues related to Le Repentir.

City Engineer Gregory Erskine mentioned, then, that his department has managed to clear the heavy vegetation from some sections but more remains and a fence on the East and West is needed to curb vandalism.

Assistant City Engineer Ron Eastman had added that plans were on stream to also upgrade the roadways and improve the aesthetics with flower and palm trees.
