U.S. Embassy conducts outreach to secondary schools

For International Education Week…

THE United States Embassy in Guyana, as part of its ‘International Educational Week’ (IEW), November 16 to 20 observance, conducted outreach sessions at several secondary schools in Georgetown and Berbice.

Members of the Embassy team speak with students on educational exchanges and pass out materials.

On those occasions, Embassy personnel shared information, on studying in the U.S., with some 1,000 students from St. Stanislaus College, St. Rose’s High School, St. Joseph’s High School, Bishops’ High School (BHS), New Guyana School, Queen’s College (QC), School of the Nations, Berbice High School and New Amsterdam Multilateral School.

Members of the Embassy team fielded questions from the students and presented educational materials to the schools at the end of each session, during which faculties at the schools also participated actively, a release said.

It said ‘IEW’ offers an opportunity to celebrate international educational exchange and its positive impact on the U.S. and the world.

The initiative highlights the benefits, for Americans, of studying abroad and seeks to attract international students to study in the U.S. and gain a better understanding of its society and values.

They also emphasised the role of education in American society, as well as the importance of understanding other countries, the release said.

Noting that U.S. President Barack Obama spoke, in March, about the importance of educational exchanges as a means of promoting mutual understanding and respect, ‘IEW’ offers the chance to answer his call to demonstrate the benefits, the release said.

It added that students and parents, who have questions about studying in the U.S. are encouraged to visit the Embassy’s website at http://georgetown.usembassy.gov/.

IEW has its own ExchangesConnect address (http://connect.state.gov), a site specifically designed for people interested in international exchanges and links to all sites are available at www.iew.state.gov.
