Housewife, 20, dead from alleged suicide

ONE more suicide was reported yesterday when 20-year-old Poonam Devi Rampersaud, of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, allegedly ended her life by hanging herself in the bathroom at home.

Her body was found dangling from polythene rope in the house she shared with her reputed husband, Azad Khan alias ‘Chicken’, who was taken into Police custody to assist with investigations into the death.

Relatives of the deceased told the Guyana Chronicle that she had prepared breakfast and shared it with Khan and another relative.

Subsequently, Khan left to go and make purchases for their dried fish business, leaving his spouse in the company of a teenage cousin.

The teen said they were playing music and talking but she went next door and, shortly after, she heard that Rampersaud was discovered dead by her mother.

The teenager said Rampersaud seemed to have been in a good mood, as she was laughing and talking with her before her demise.

Family members could not speculate on what might have caused the young woman to kill herself, because she and Khan had normal domestic problems like any other couple.

Rampersaud’s mother, Radha Singh, of Diamond Housing Scheme, also on East Bank Demerara, who had gone to visit her daughter, told reporters she does not believe she took her own life.

The woman said a knife was found next to the corpse and, together with the rope, was taken away by the Police.

Singh said her daughter had been living with Khan since she was 17 years old and they shared a fairly good relationship.

The victim was not suicidal, her mother vowed, weeping as she begged the policeman present to let her view the remains of Rampersaud.

Others at the scene said Rampersaud was a housewife who seemed content and scores of villagers gathered to get a glimpse of her wrapped in a sheet, to be taken to Lyken Funeral Parlour.
