Fundamental principles of democracy have returned to Guyana

GUYANA has managed to escape the chains of 28 years of rule under an authoritarian regime, where the fundamental principles of democracy were unreal. The Government of Guyana has managed to return to Guyana, the fundamental principles of democracy, the restoration of the best practices of Human Rights, sound macro-economic fundamentals, and free and fair elections in 1992.

Politics in Guyana is the main cause for racial segregation among the people and the deliberate act of maintaining this segregation for political support is daunting. The culprits within our society tend to stir up trouble to seek attention for their own selfish reasons, either to fame their name, or to promote ignorance.

In an effort to sustain Good Governance, Government made a number of constitutional and parliamentary reforms under the rubric of ‘voice and accountability.’ These reforms were done under inclusivity and participation from parliamentary political parties, civil society, non-governmental organisations and communities.

Guyana is progressing based on its historical economic performance, but the opposition seems to find this fact hard to accept. Guyana probably has not yet attained its golden age, but prospects for such an accomplishment are well underway.

Also, detractors when making their comments, seem to forget to take into consideration the economic state of the world, and just base their comments on the readings from a couple of chapters of a few books and make conclusions, often distorting Guyana’s history and the present state of its economy. This is wrong, since the world is presently challenged with a global food and fuel crisis, slowing down development in many countries; despite this economic crisis, Guyana still manages to achieve sound macroeconomic fundamentals as cited by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

There is urgent need for cooperation among Guyanese, especially when the critics are suddenly active and seek to distort Guyana’s progress, and segregate the people. We need to remember our motto, and make responsible remarks for the benefit of Guyana instead of seeking to suffer the ordinary people for our own self-interest.
