Confessed reformed ‘trunker’ remanded

RICHARD Craigen, 28, of Lot 66 Broad Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, will make his next appearance in another Court on July 3, still facing charges of simple larceny and damage to property.

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, before whom he appeared yesterday, transferred the cases and remanded him to prison after he pleaded not guilty in both.

Particulars of the offences said, last June 9, he stole one cell phone valued $35,000 and $40,000 from Careene Alexander and caused $15,000 damage to a car window, property of Anthony Alexander.

Craigen confessed that he used to be a ‘trunker’ (one who steals from unattended motor vehicles) but said he had stopped and now owns his own business.

However, Careene Alexander, who was in the courtroom, said she was using the vehicle belonging to her Police Corporal husband and stopped to make a phone call when Craigen pulled up alongside and she had a good look at him.

The woman said she went somewhere to make the call and, on returning, saw the defendant driving away.

It was on re-entering the vehicle that she observed her purse and phone missing and a window shattered.

Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram, prosecuting, said Craigen was previously before the same Court on five occasions for similar reasons and he successfully opposed bail for him.
