Brazilian student, Andressa Aldes Seerreia, 21, who resides in Guyana, yesterday, donated a rescued female giant river turtle to the Guyana Zoological Park.

Ms. Seerreia told the Guyana Chronicle that during a visit to Lethem, she encountered a woman who was about to kill the turtle and rescued it and brought it to the city.

“I like the turtle and I kept it in a drum at my home for a month; but I knew it deserves professional care and gave it to the Guyana Zoological Park,” she explained.

Ms. Seerreia said that in return she will be taken to the Park any time she wanted to see the turtle and she is quite pleased that it would be properly cared for.

Meanwhile, an official of the Park told the Guyana Chronicle that the donation was readily received and the giant river turtle was placed in the aquarium.

He pointed out that the giant river turtle is one of the largest sweet water turtles in the world.

Her diet includes vegetables, fruits, and small fishes.
