Family homeless after drag race crash needs help

THE family of five, whose home was badly damaged last May 3, when two speeding motor cars crashed into it, at Ruby Public Road, East Bank Essequibo, needs help to rebuild.

Head of the household, Mohamed Kazim Haniff, 39, of Ruby, told the Guyana Chronicle on Thursday that, since the incident, he, his wife and three children have been staying with relatives about a mile away.

He said most of their appliances and furniture were destroyed when the building collapsed after being hit about 01:30 h while they were asleep.

Haniff said, luckily, they got out unhurt.

He said, so far, they have received assistance from a Muslim organisation and are in the rebuilding process but need more to complete the reconstruction.

Other residents of the village who previously expressed concern about the plight of the homeless clan, joined in the appeal to more public-spirited citizens.

Haniff told the Guyana Chronicle the Police advised him to initiate private legal action as the matter is out of their hands.

A 25-year-old motorist was killed and another seriously injured when the two drag racing vehicles careened off the road, broke a utility pole and slammed into the Haniffs’ home, breaking three of the concrete posts on which the building stood.

The deceased is Ramesh Sookdeo, of Parika Façade, also on East Bank Essequiibo, who was a mini-bus conductor.

His uncle, Richard Whyte, who operates a trucking service and was in the same car, was treated for severe head injuries.
