Knight Riders pull off upset win in Savitri memorial cricket

… wins also for Pomeroon Oil Mill, Cavaliers and Eagles Sports Club
THE first round of the Kishun & Savitri Memorial Twenty20 cricket competition in the Pomeroon was played last Sunday with some close finishes in all four matches.

In the first match at the Tenneze Ferme ground between Tenneze Ferme and Pomeroon Oil Mill Sports Club (POMSC), the latter won the match by 88 runs.

Winning the toss and electing to bat POMSC compiled 146 for 7 off their allotted 20 overs with Mukesh Singh stroking an attacking 60 which included eight fours and a six.

He received good support from Carlos Thornhill 14 (1×4) and Abraham Benjamin 11 (1×4). Bowling for Tenneze Ferme, Trevor Rodrigues two for 21 and Euson two for 23 were the bowlers who did most of the damage.

In their reply Tenneze Ferme batsmen found the pace of the POMSC bowlers too hot to handle and never threatened the total, eventually being bowled out for 58 in the 13th over.

Only Ralph France batting at number 10 made 20 (1×4, 2×6) and Wayne Narine 12 (1×4) got to double figures. Bowling for POMSC, Lue Samuels returned the good figures of three for five from three overs Gary France two for 12 did most of the damage while there was a wicket each for Carlos Thornhill and Mukesh Singh.

In the second match of the day at the same venue Knight Riders Sports Club (KRSC) pulled off the shock of the day as they beat Friendship Sports Club by two wickets.

Batting first after winning the toss Friendship batsmen never promised much after an opening stand of 47 between Ronald Kanhai 20 ( 4×4) and Rocky Boyan 22 (2×4, 1×6) and were eventually dismissed for 124 in the 18th over.

The only other meaningful contribution came from Deon Roberts 17 (2×4) and Selwin Allen 15 (1×4, 1×6). Bowling for KRSC, Ricardo Barrakat 4-30-3 and Rizwan Barrakat 4-20-3 did the bulk of the damage with their leg-breaks while they were well supported by Brandon Cabose and Ravi Ramroop who both took a wicket.

In reply KRSC were in early trouble at 11 for two in the fourth over but a stand of 81 between captain Brandon Cabose 56 (3×4) and Vishnu Bispat 41 (3×4), who both benefited from three chances, got them back in the game.

When Bispat was lbw to Royston Kanhai with the score on 92 in the 15th over, Friendship bowlers suddenly found the life that they were lacking and got four more wickets for just 24 runs.

KRSC went into the last over needing 7 runs but lost Cabose and Rizwan Barrakat both via run-out off the first two balls. Ryan Tang hit the third ball for four and then edged the fourth one to third man for two. The victory was sealed off the next ball as he pulled a short delivery from Riley Henry to midwicket to spark wild celebrations by the KRSC players.

Ronald Kanhai and Royston Kanhai took two wickets bowling for Friendship Sports Club.

In the two matches played at the Cavaliers Sports Club ground, Upper Pomeroon River,

Cavaliers Sports Club (CSC) got the better of Siriki Sports Club by 50 runs. Batting first, CSC made 183 for 8 off their 20 overs, with Chris Williams 83 (6×4, 5×6) and Mark Gonsalves 23.
