GOPIO lecture series begins today

THE Guyana Chapter of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) in collaboration with the Indian Commemoration Trust will, from today, be hosting its Third Arrival Month 2009 Lecture Series to mark the 171st Anniversary of the arrival of East Indians to Guyana.
Vice President of GOPIO (Guyana) Dr. Prem Misir, who is also Coordinator of the lecture series, noted that the first lecture by Dr Yesu Persaud, GOPIO (Guyana) President on xIndia and the Worldx will be held today at the Pegasus Hotel, Kingston; followed by Mr. Pat Dial on xThe Status of Indians in Guyanax on May 14, 2009 at National Library; and the last lecture on May 21, 2009 will take place at Hotel Tower by Swami Aksharananda on xThe Christian Missionary Enterprise during Indentureshipx.

All lectures are scheduled to commence at 17:00 h and admission is free.

Dr. Misir noted that GOPIO was founded at the First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in New York in 1989.

GOPIO is a non-partisan association engaged in promoting the well-being of people of Indian origin and enhancing cooperation and communication between Indians living in different countries.

The initial thrust of GOPIO was fighting human rights violation of people of Indian origin and although this has been improved in the last decade, human rights violations continue to be a major issue for People of Indian Origin (PIOs) living outside India.
GOPIO is spread in 19 countries and has over 25 chapters.
