THERE continues to be a reactive or closing of the barn door after the horses have fled response to problems. The Police are expected to ensure that public institutions are protected and places of importance like banks, etc, if not by private security.

All court officials cannot demand to have 24-hour police protection if one is robbed, while the rest of Guyana’s tax payers do without such protection. Threats of not doing their jobs because of no home security are unacceptable. There must be a better way. Officials must help to protect themselves with firearms and better precautionary steps in their homes. We need more proactive Police/Ministers instead of waiting for presidential interventions or public service threats.
