Essequibo in control after first day’s play

THE first day’s play in the sponsored GTM three-day inter county cricket match between Essequibo and Demerara at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground, Essequibo Coast surely belongs to the home boys.

After Essequibo opening bowler Rensford Beaton took two quick wickets in the only over faced by Demerara leaving them stuttering at two wickets for one run replying to the host 227 all out in 87.1 overs.

Sent in to bat first under brilliant sunshine on a superb outfield Essequibo opening pair of Herell Green and Navin Singh put together 97 before Herell Green was out for 55 which comprises of three boundaries, Navin Singh soon followed after stroking 47 including four boundaries.

After the fall of the two opening batsmen Demerara made steady inroads in the Essequibo batting with the only other resistance coming from skipper and National Under -19 batsman Royston Atkins who made a quick 36 decorated with a six and four fours. Ravindra Parsram chipped in with 26. Amir Khan, Trashon Shivgobin, Totaram Bishun and Trevon Griffith each took two wickets.

Essequibo will look to make further inroads into the Demerara batting order when play resumes on the second day with play scheduled to start at 10:00 h (Brandon Cabose).
