Unamaco has failed to meet its commitments

THE fact remains that Unamco has failed in its commitment to the government and people of Guyana. There is no justification for the leases renewal from the employment records, income generation and revenue collection promised. Contacts with many of the past local employees of Unamco will reveal more reasons to send that company packing. It is not only its failure to sustain employment of locals or meet its financial obligations to the state but also the misuse of tax concessions granted.

For many years Unamco has operated on a skeleton staff and with poor equipment, long before 2006 when the lease was not renewed. Despite many promises as pointed out by the GFC, they failed to meet their commitments. They must have felt that their actions had no consequences.

They have appealed to the cherished memory of Dr. Cheddi Jagan. They failed to take into account Dr. Jagan’s no nonsense record. Dr. Jagan would have years ago reminded Unamco that the forestry sector is serious business for serious investors.

It is heartening that the Unamco investors have chosen the newspapers for their ultimate despair. Finally the administrators might have signalled their fill of UNAMCO’s false promises. Congratulations to you. Dr. Jagan would have been so proud.
