Today the Joint Services feel a sense of pride in giving service

I am very disappointed with Kirk Gonsalves’ letter published in the Kaieteur News of April 1, 2009 and captioned, “It’s time to get the guns off the streets”.

In the letter he stated that the “Guyana Police Force is being used as an political tool and it is time they start operating more as an efficient crime fighting unit and less as a mouthpiece for the government”. This is an act of mischief to misinform the public through lies.

To begin with, let’s compare the Burnham era with the PPP/C’s administration as it relates to the freedom of the Guyana Police Force. Any Guyanese from those days can clearly testify that the GPF was in physical bondage and totally controlled by the Burnham government

Never in the history of this country has the armed forces received so much resources and it is all because of the commitment and dedication of the present Government towards ensuring an effective and efficient security force in our country.

Today our Joint Services feel a sense of pride in giving service to their country and there is no doubt that they are receiving more cooperation from the public.

There are many illegal firearms in this country but most countries are facing this same challenge.

The government has not been complacent about the problem.

I think that it is time we stop being negative about our dear country and join the security forces in making it a better place because the Government alone cannot do it.
