A Tribute to Janet Jagan

– Quotes that reflect her life
When the roll-call is made, history will place Mrs. Jagan centre stage with outstanding leaders like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi and her own husband Dr. Cheddi Jagan – a few select individuals whose selfless dedication to humanity has made this world a much better place through to live in.

Hers was a life of such magnitude, and others know the details so much better that I feel inadequate to the task of commenting on it.

I will simply offer some images borrowed from the book Cheddi Jagan – My fight for Guyana’s Freedom by Nadira Jagan-Brancier, along with a few great quotes (ironically, some from former adversaries) that one could easily imagine her saying or others saying of her.

As Mother of the Nation

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.
I have a dream today.
I have a dream that…

As a Freedom Fighter

Janet Jagan was sent to jail for 6 months with hard labour. When she was arrested she could have paid a fine of $145 and not gone to jail, but that was not the way of civil disobedience…
…we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.

As an Inspiration to the Nation

And so, my fellow Americans:
ask not what your country can do for you ask what you can do for your country.

As a Visionary

Some men see things as they are and ask why. I dream things that never were and ask why not?
George Bernard Shaw

I never associate with Prophets of Doom, rather I have always been and will always be a supreme optimist.
Cheddi Jagan February 1997

Leaders like Janet Jagan move ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

She charted new directions and broke new ground, reflecting feelings and ideas which people harboured, but which they may not have been able to put into words themselves.

More than being a step ahead; she articulated a vision that embodied the aspirations and feelings of her country – Guyana.
Farewell Mrs. Jagan
