Chinese Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, CARICOM Mission Heads sign Book of Condolence

VICE-MINISTER of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, Mr. Li Jinzhang, with responsibilities for the Latin American and Caribbean Region visited the Guyana Embassy in Beijing on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 to sign on behalf of the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Book of Condolence for the late Former President of Guyana, Her Excellency Mrs. Janet Jagan.

Vice Minister Li on behalf of the Government of China and the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed deep condolences to the Government of Guyana and to the family of the late Mrs. Janet Jagan. He recalled that some forty years ago Mrs. Jagan visited China for the first time and was known amongst the older generation of Chinese Politicians. He also noted her sterling contributions in the political arena in Guyanese history.

On Monday last CARICOM Heads of Missions in Beijing also visited the Guyana Embassy to sign the Book of Condolence on behalf of their respective Governments. Present were: His Excellency Mohamed Soerokarso, Ambassador of Suriname; His Excellency Courtenay Rattray, Jamaican Ambassador; Her Excellency Marcelle Gairy, Ambassador of Grenada and Mrs. Sheila Carey, Charge d’ Affaires of the Bahamas Embassy.
