Plaisance/Industry Market increase in rents too high

PERMIT us to highlight our grave concerns as vendors of the Plaisance/Industry Market.

Despite voicing our suggestions to the Plaisance/Industry NDC which is directly responsible for the market affairs, to date nothing has been done and we would be grateful if the Ministry of Local Government can look into the matter.

The stall rent went up by 100 – 110 per cent as compared to Bourda Market increase of 50 per cent. As such, we the vendors are finding it difficult to pay such a high increase for rent, as we receive far less customers at the Plaisance/Industry Market as compared to Bourda Market which is located in the capital city, Georgetown.

At the said meeting with the NDC, we suggested that the Council should calculate the rate for rental by the square foot, but it seems that despite promises made to review this matter, nothing was done resulting in some stallholders who occupied larger stalls are paying cheaper rates than others with smaller size stalls.

We wish to draw to attention to the fact that the Market Clerk is going around collecting rent from certain stallholders when the Council failed to address the concerns of the remaining stallholders.

We do hope that democracy prevails and each stallholder will be asked to pay per square foot for the stall they occupy and not that some will pay higher while others will enjoy a lower rate.
