Fingered taxi driver on armed robbery charge remanded

TAXI driver Timothy St. Hill, 28, of Lot 333 Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, who was fingered by an armed robbery victim was yesterday remanded to prison.

Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle, before whom the accused appeared, transferred the case to another Court, for him to make another appearance today.

Particulars of the indictable offence said, on February 23, being armed with a gun, St. Hill robbed Mahase Harripaul of a gold jewellery valued $745,000.

Police Inspector Denise Griffith, prosecuting, who successfully objected to bail for the overnight prisoner, said, apart from the seriousness of the crime, it is possible that, if he secures pre-trail liberty, St. Hill would interfere with the virtual complainant or other witnesses.

The Prosecutor refuted a claim by Defence Counsel Adrian Thompson and said the accused was positively identified by Harripaul.

Thompson had argued that it is a case of mistaken identity, as it was not the virtual complainant but another witness who identified St. Hill on an identification parade.

In front of the same magistrate, Wenrick Wilson, 29, pleaded not guilty to robbery with violence.

Particulars of his offence said, on February 23, too, he robbed Francesa Ramsarran of two cell phones valued $52,000 and other belongings worth $7,500 more, using personal violence.

He, however, was put on $60,000 bail after the Court overruled Police objection to the grant and put off the case to March 17.

A third man, Leslie Smartt, 19, was made to lodge $30,000 for his condition freedom until March 13 after he pleaded not guilty to larceny from the person.

The defendant (no address given either) is alleged to have stolen a cell phone, priced at $32,000, from Alima Mohammed on February 25.

The Prosecutor said Police saw when the defendant snatched the instrument and apprehended him.
