The prisoner, who on her first appearance pleaded not guilty to the charges, informed the court through a lawyer that she wanted to change her plea.

But before re-reading the charges to Smith and accepting her ‘new’ plea, Magistrate Azeez queried of the lawyer whether the woman was aware that she would have to serve a sentence.

Smith was accused of, on August 10, last year, while armed with a gun and in the company of others, robbing Sammy Kalisarran of three chains, a gold band and money, all to the value of $1.2M.

For the theft of the chains and gold band, Smith was slapped with a one-year jail sentence and two years for the money.

But the prisoner will only serve two years’ jail as the Magistrate ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
