TERRI-ANN Smith, ( no address given) who faced two charges of ‘robbery under arms’ committed on August 10, 2008, was jailed for three years when she appeared Friday before Magistrate Fazil Azeez, at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court. The prisoner, who on her first appearance pleaded not guilty to the charges, informed the court through a lawyer that she wanted to change her plea. But before re-reading the charges to Smith and accepting her ‘new’ plea, Magistrate Azeez queried of the lawyer whether the woman was aware that she would have to serve a sentence. Smith was accused of, on August 10, last year, while armed with a gun and in the company of others, robbing Sammy Kalisarran of three chains, a gold band and money, all to the value of $1.2M. For the theft of the chains and gold band, Smith was slapped with a one-year jail sentence and two years for the money. But the prisoner will only serve two years’ jail as the Magistrate ordered that the sentences run concurrently.
