Sarwan looking forward to fourth Test

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) –For several reasons, West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan is looking forward to the fourth Test against England, starting tomorrow at Kensington Oval here.

West Indies lead the five-Test series 1-0, following an innings and 23-run victory in the opening Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica, the abandonment of the second Test at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua, and a draw in the third Test at the Antigua Recreation Ground.

One of the main reasons for Sarwan’s eagerness is that a victory would hand West Indies their first series victory in the last five years.

“It is a very important Test match,” he told reporters yesterday. “Obviously, we have got one more Test match after this, and if we either draw or win this Test match, we would have won the series.

“I think leading up to the next Test match, it is important that we regain a little of that momentum we had in Jamaica. I think we lost some of it in Antigua, but I think this Test match presents a great opportunity for us to play here well as a team.”

West Indies have not won a series over a side ranked higher than they are on the World Rankings, since they prevailed over Sri Lanka 1-0 in a two-Test series six years ago in the Caribbean.

But Sarwan believes that West Indies are due a series win, following some consistent performances in recent months.

“We have become a little more consistent, and are getting better as a team,” he said. “So it is important for us to try and build as a team, and work as a team.

“If we were to win the Test match and win the series, it would be a great achievement for us.

“I have been in quite a few Test series and we have not won too many, so if we do this, it would be quite an achievement.

“But I do not want us to look too far ahead though. We have got to take it step by step, and it is important whenever the Test match starts, from day one we need to continue to do the things that we have been doing right.”

In the previous Test last week at the ARG, Sarwan became only the third batsman to score four hundreds in the fourth innings of a Test, following Sunil Gavaskar of India and Australia’s Ricky Ponting.

Neither Ponting nor Sarwan lost any of the matches in which they scored hundreds in the final innings, but the former West Indies captain felt the hundred had more value because it allowed the Caribbean side to escape with a draw.

“I think it was a great Test match,” he said. “I do not know if it was a great escape. I think it was good for Test cricket, and it was one of the best Test matches I have played in.

“But that is behind us now, and we got to look forward to the next Test match that starts on Thursday. Hopefully, we do not find ourselves in the same predicament.”

The fifth and final Test of the series starts on March 6 at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad and Tobago.
