On remand for assaulting wife

BRENTNOL Lyken of Parika Backdam, who assaulted his wife on February 16 last, was remanded to prison when he appeared before Magistrate Fazil Azeez, at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court to answer a charge of assault.

The Court heard how the accused, who is to re-appear in court on Friday, would usually abuse and assault his wife of 19 years.

On the day in question, and in the presence of the couple’s 13-year-old daughter, the prisoner allegedly pushed the woman towards a chester-drawers and also slapped her.

Asked by the Magistrate what prompted her husband’s action, the woman said that the man is in the habit of going home and heading straight to bed without bathing. And , should she tell him to bathe, he would abuse and assault her.

“So he wants to get into bed without bathing, lock him out the room, he is a nasty man,” said the magistrate, to the amusement of the people seated in the courtroom.

The wife further told the Court that she is afraid of her husband as he would also threaten her.

And, upon demonstrating to the Court how her husband would wrench and squeeze her hand painfully, the magistrate remarked, “This man has the romantic manners of a bull .”

He then advised the woman that she visit the Legal Aid Centre, Charlotte Street, to see whatever assistance she could be offered.

The husband who denied all of the allegations against him was nevertheless remanded to prison.
