Freed larceny defendant bonded after paying Court costs

KERWIN Willis, 22, of Lot 74 St. Stephens Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, was freed of a larceny charge yesterday but bonded to keep the peace for two years.

Before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle, where he was charged with larceny from the person, the probationer also paid Martina Culpepper $20,000 to repair her damaged jewellery.

Willis pleaded not guilty to the February 23 offence, particulars of which said he stole two gold chains, valued $36,000, from the virtual complainant on Mash Day.

But Police Inspector Denise Griffith, prosecuting, said the jewels were recovered from the defendant’s pants crotch.

Culpepper said she was walking in the Stabroek area when Willis approached her from behind and snatched the chains.

She said she chased after him and nearby Police arrested the thief.

Culpepper demanded compensation.

Willis denied the theft and said, he picked up the booty after someone else dropped it.

After she received the money from Willis, Culpepper said she did not wish to offer evidence against him.

However, the magistrate ordered Willis to sign the bond and pay $5,000 Court costs.
