Dyson expects Windies to lift their game at Kensington Oval

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – John Dyson is cautiously optimistic West Indies can lift their game to win the fourth Test against England, starting tomorrow at Kensington Oval, and complete a rare Test series victory.

The West Indies coach admitted that his side is still capable of having bad days – like the first four in the third Test at the Antigua Recreation Ground – but he felt there are times when they can rise to the occasion like the final in that Test and play extraordinary cricket.

“Unfortunately, we do have to accept that bad days are still going to happen,” he said. “But we are looking for ways to get rid of those days.

“I felt in Antigua, the first session when we should have been really pumped up and stamped ourselves on the match, we were flat. We lacked that intensity. We lacked the passion that only came out on the last afternoon when we had to fight like mad to survive.

“But that’s not just about consistently performing, but it is about consistently maintaining the intensity to produce the sort of performance that you need to prevail in a Test match.”

Dyson agreed that the big area of concern right now for his side is batting consistently well from innings to innings and from Test match to Test match.

“We need to be consistently putting big totals on the board particularly in the first innings,” he said.

“England showed in the Antigua Test that if you put a very big score on the board in the first innings, then you can pretty much control the game.”

But Dyson does not believe that either side has any great advantage in terms of the momentum.

“Both teams have played periods of excellent cricket and both teams have played some poor cricket,” he said.

“England have been hit by a couple of injuries, so it is difficult to say who has got the most momentum.

“You can only take it game by game. You turn up on the morning of the Test match, have a look at the pitch and it can all unfold from there.”

Overall, Dyson was pretty satisfied with the way things were progressing, and was looking forward to the Barbados Test.

“I was very pleased with the result in Jamaica,” he said. “We played some great cricket in Jamaica.

“Then we showed some great character in Antigua. It was a bit disappointing the way we batted and bowled, but the final result showed a lot of character.

“England will come at us even harder in the fourth Test, but I expect a good pitch in Barbados – that’s traditional for this ground – and I expect a very good Test match.
