City teams continue winning ways in Mayor’s Cup football

TEAMS from the City (Georgetown) continued their winning ways on Sunday evening when the Annual Mayor’s Cup Football Tournament continued at the GFC ground with a double-header.

On Sunday evening two East Demerara teams were booted out of the knock-out competition, suffering the same fate as the two from the mining town of Linden at the boots of city teams when the tournament got under way last Friday.

On Sunday, Victoria Kings, a once powerful team were drubbed 4-0 by reigning Kashif and Shanghai champions Pele while in the opening game on Sunday, Georgetown’s Fruta Conquerors edged Golden Grove 1-0.

Travis `Zorro’ Grant spearheaded Pele’s victory with a double which was registered in the 19th and 72nd minutes, while Konata Mannings and Mervin Joseph accounted for the other two goals in the 17th and 53rd minutes respectively.

Mannings opened his team’s account after receiving the ball in the middle of the opposition’s field of play and dribbling the defence before slotting it home past Kings’ custodian.

Grant subsequently received the ball from a counterattack on the right wing and immediately raced down the very wing and executed a clinical shot that sent the ball at the back of Kings’ net.

Then it was Joseph’s turn to add his name to the score list. He received the ball on the left wing, worked it down the wing and amazingly booted it into the opposition’s goal.

In the opening encounter, Manasseh Primo found the winner in the 26th minute of play to steer his team to the second round (quarter-final) of competition.

When the tournament got under way last Friday at the same venue, GFC of Georgetown beat Bakewell Topp XX of Linden 2-1 while GDF, also of Georgetown, edged Milerock 1-0.

The competition will continue on Friday with another double-header at the very venue.

In the opening encounter, Buxton of East Demerara will come up against Uprising of Georgetown from 18:00 h while in the feature match which is scheduled to get under way from 20:00 h, Alpha United of Georgetown will face BV/Triumph of East Demerara.

The tournament, which is being organised by former national player and coach Lennox Arthur, will have up for grabs over $850 000 in prize money along with trophies and will be held under the auspices of Georgetown’s Mayor Hamilton Green.

The winning team in this year’s tournament will receive $500 000 and the Keith Niles trophy, while the second- to fourth-place teams will receive $200 000, $100 000 and $50 000 respectively along with trophies.

Prizes will also be awarded to the Most Valuable Player, the Best Goalkeeper and the Highest Goal Scorer.

To date, Arthur has received pledges of financial support from Courtney Benn Contracting and Construction Company, MACORP, General Equipment Guyana Limited, Bakewell, Banks DIH Limited and Demerara Distillers Limited.

He is however urging other corporate entities to come on board.

The other first round matches to be completed are as follows: BK International Western Tigers tackle Uitvlugt and Sunburst Camptown are down to oppose Pouderoyen.

For the quarter-finals, Pele will face the winner of the Buxton United/BV/Triumph fixture; the winner of the Tigers/Uitvlugt encounter meet the winner of the Camptown/Pouderoyen affair; GDF face Fruta Conquerors and GFC meet the winner of the Alpha/BV/Triumph fixture. (Michael DaSilva)
