‘Tiger Bay’ larceny, false pretence defendants both remanded

LATOYA Saygon, 18, of Lot 12 ‘A’ Rosemary Lane (Tiger Bay), Georgetown, was one of two defendants remanded to prison yesterday by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle.

Saygon pleaded not guilty to a larceny charge, which said, on February 11, she stole spectacles valued $48,000 and a pair of earrings worth $4,000, property of Carla Beveney.

The virtual complainant, who was in Court, alleged that the defendant went to her home and committed the theft.

Saygon will make her next appearance on February 16.

The other defendant refused bail, Terry Abrams, 42, is charged on three counts of obtaining money by false pretence and denied all.

Particulars of the offences said:

* on February 9, with intent to defraud, he took $100,000 from Michelle Peters, under the pretext that he is employed by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security and was in a position to secure land and house for her, knowing the undertaking to be false;

* between January 17 and 31, he obtained $15,000 from Marcia Pollard, by pretending he was also employed by Food for the Poor and could get her a house and land and

* on February 5, he obtained $35,000 from Onicka Edwards through the same false pretence.

Police Inspector Denise Griffith, prosecuting, successfully opposed the bail grant to Abrams, on the ground that other charges are likely to be laid against him, as more persons have made similar reports implicating him.

Abrams has to be back in Court February 27. (Nathalene DeFreitas)
