CCC snatch two late wickets after Barbados take early honours

CRAB HILL, Barbados (CMC) – Combined Campuses and Colleges snatched two wickets in the final session to put Barbados on the defensive at the close on the opening day of their WICB Regional four-day match yesterday.

Defending 198 after they were asked to bat in the sixth round encounter at the scenic North Stars Ground, the CCC reduced Barbados to 53 for two with both openers back in the pavilion.

They prised out the burly Jason Parris for 10 with the score on 17 and with the day drawing to a close, captured the prized wicket of captain Jason Haynes for 19, leg-before-wicket to off-spinner Ryan Austin at 48.

Earlier, medium pacer Dwayne Smith captured a four-wicket haul to undermine the CCC whose innings stuttered along before finally coming to a halt after tea.

Kurt Wilkinson top-scored with a cameo 44 while Chadwick Walton cracked 43; but the right-armer Smith claimed four for 45 to keep Barbados on top.

The right-handed Wilkinson struck eight fours off 39 balls and dominated a 50-run, fourth-wicket stand with Romel Currency who scored 14.

Walton, who faced 62 balls and struck eight fours in just under an hour-and-a-half at the crease, found no support down the order as the innings fell away.

Kavesh Kantasingh crafted an unbeaten 30 at the end to give the innings impetus but was unable to push his side past the crucial 200-run mark.

Medium pacer Kevin Stoute (2-16) and fast bowler Kemar Roach (2-60) finished with two wickets apiece.
