FORMER Acting Chief Magistrate Cecil Sullivan has been named to the new post of Summary Courts Manager.

He will be responsible for, among other things, maintenance of the Magistrates’ Courts, matters affecting magistrates countrywide and other staff problems.

Following his appointment by Acting Chancellor the Judiciary, Justice of Appeal Carl Singh, Mr. Sullivan assumed duties yesterday and immediately began apprising himself of issues that affect at least 16 magistrates in Demerara, Essequibo and Berbice.

Speaking from his office in Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts compound, Sullivan told the Guyana Chronicle: “I am deeply humbled and honoured to be appointed as the Summary Courts Manager of the Magistrates’ Courts in Guyana.

&#For, in the position of my appointment, I will be working along with all the magistrates in our combined efforts to improve the justice system in the Summary Courts.”

He remarked that, during his years on the Magisterial Bench, he gained much experience.

&#Therefore, I feel committed to utilise my experience gained and give back to my well-wishers and the Guyanese society in my new position,” Sullivan added.

He had been a policeman in the Mounted Branch when, in 1979, he was granted State leave to pursue studies in law.

Sullivan qualified as lawyer in 1985 and became a magistrate in 1987 and rose to seniority in the system.

He had been acting as Chief Magistrate on his retirement in August 2007.
