16 head teachers to receive duty free concessions

16 head teachers will now benefit from duty free concessions, and more than 30 other names have been submitted for approval by the Finance Ministry.
“Approval has been given and very soon they will be driving their cars along the streets of Georgetown, Essequibo, Berbice, Linden, Bartica and other places,” Corretta McDonald, General Secretary of the Guyana Teachers Union announced at a press conference Tuesday.
The teachers name for the first 16 duty free concessions are Kamal Persaud, Kathlene Armstrong, Magna Bethune, Zailmoon Samad, Gwenette Sam, Bernadette Lewis, Chandradee Kanhni, Paul La Cruz, Susan Rhius, Vernell Razack-Giles, Deborah Greenidge-Hinds, Juliet Mattis, Avril Lake, Georgieanai Lewis, Paulette Merell and Beverly Henry.
In order to benefit from the duty free concessions, a head teacher must have been serving in the capacity for three or more years and must be in a position to serve for another five years.
Teacher Samad, the head teacher of the Leonora Primary School said she was “ecstatic” at the news, saying she has been waiting since 2009.
“God is always in charge. I was looking out for this for a long time, since 2009. But you know, God is in charge, and the time right.”
