THANKS to the Digicel Schools Football Tournament, every year a star is born. Meet fourteen-year-old Omar Brewley, the Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School striker who has made a name for himself in the sport locally, with the aspiration of being a ‘Golden Jaguar’ one day. “This is my first time playing in the Digicel schools football tournament and it certainly wouldn’t be my last,” said the Third Form student from the country’s most decorated football-playing high school.
Last Sunday at the Guyana National Stadium, Brewley scored in the 58th minute goal to help his school to a 2-1 victory over Chase Academy and also to earn their fourth consecutive title.
It was a joyous moment for the boys from the mining town while for one player; it was an event that will forever be remembered.
Brewley, a well-built 14-year-old, only recently returned from living in the USA and it was the joy of playing in the Digicel football tournament that brought him back to these shores.
Crediting his parents for the support given, the soft-spoken football player attributed his success in the tournament to his head coach Anthony Stephens, who he said has given him the confidence to score a total of ten goals in this year’s tournament.
“The coach is the person responsible for me doing well in the tournament. He always tells me to go out and play my football and to play what he has taught us in training and I try to do everything he tells me to,” said the young Brewley.
Naming Cristiano Ronaldo as his icon, Brewley said that former National midfield player Kayode McKinnon was the first one to teach him the basics of the game and also encouraged him to stick to the game and be disciplined.
“Well, since I was younger, I attended Kayode’s summer camp and he used to teach me the game. I learn the game by just playing in the afternoons with my friends but he (Kayode) was the one who said that I will be a good player if I remain disciplined and stay focused,” Brewley said in an exclusive interview with Chronicle Sport.
Despite bring 14 years young, Brewley is no stranger to senior football – being a member of the Eagles Football Club in Linden.
According to the charismatic striker, “Honestly, my father is there for me and always supporting me financially with everything, but my mother also shows a lot of support. One day, It’s my dream to represent Guyana. You know, wearing the colours and doing the country proud is something I look forward to and will be working hard to achieve.”
Brewley, only 14 years old, is seen as his team’s most potent player and has found the net in crucial times for his school. But the striker believes that though playing a pivotal role, there was no pressure at all to produce.
“No, man, I wasn’t pressured,” the player said, while laughing. “I just went out and played my football and did what the coach said. I went into the final well prepared and confident of winning because this is what I dream of; playing football and going far and I know that this is a start for me”
The Christianburg/Wismar Secondary player said “Collie Hercules, I look up to. My father used to take me to watch him play and I always want to score like him. But, I want to go far in football – do well in school and become the best player.”
His father, Marvin Brewley said while investing in his son’s football career is important, insuring that he stays in school, remains disciplined and have a good education is equally or more important.
The older Brewley pointed out that as a parent, he intends to give his son the support needed while keeping him grounded to achieve a good education and being a respectable young man in the community.
