Female cricketer fined $25,000 for assaulting team-mate

A TWENTY- three-year-old female national cricketer was yesterday fined $25,000 by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry for assaulting another cricketer.Akaze Thompson pleaded guilty to the charge that said on March 20 at Regent Street, Georgetown, she unlawfully assaulted Joanna Van Sertima so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
The prosecution revealed that both parties are known to each other and that on the day in question around 19:10hrs, Thompson accused Van Sertima of “talking her name.” After a confrontation, Thompson dealt Van Sertima several cuffs about her body.
According to Thompson, it reached a point where she cannot deal with the situation anymore. She admitted that she cuffed Van Sertima, who also returned a cuff before the fight started.
A failure to pay the fine will result in three weeks imprisonment.
